Did you know that kidney failure is the 9th leading cause of death in the Philippines?
To give you an idea of how rampant the disease is, imagine this.
- Every hour, one Filipino would develop chronic renal failure.
- 14,000 Filipinos and more undergo dialysis every year!
That’s quite shocking, right?
I bet you don’t want to become part of this statistic.
How can you do that?
Just keep your kidneys healthy.
As to how you’re going to do it specifically, here are some of my tips.
Keep your kidneys healthy by maintaining a healthy blood pressure.
What you should be aiming is a blood pressure of below 140/90 mm Hg.
Anything above that is already not good.
You know why a normal blood pressure is essential in keeping your kidneys at the peak of their health?
High blood pressure affects the filtering system of the kidneys.
If your kidneys can’t filter your blood well, it’s going to accumulate toxins and those toxins will circulate all over your body.
Keep your kidneys healthy by controlling your blood glucose level.
This may be challenging for those with diabetes but it has to be done.
The normal range for a healthy blood glucose level depends on the time of day or activities you have been doing.
Why is it essential to maintain a normal level of sugar on the blood?
Because when there’s too much sugar on blood, it tends to get thick and sticky.
When blood is too thick, its flow on the arteries and veins will be compromised.
When your circulation is compromised, the filtering system of your kidneys will also be affected.
We don’t want that to happen, do we?
Keep your kidneys healthy by controlling your cholesterol level.
When you have too much bad cholesterol, it tends to block or narrow the passageway of blood.
Some parts of your body will get less blood flow and your heart reacts to this.
Your heart pumps more forcefully than it should be.
Then high blood pressure would occur.
This will then lead us back to tip number 1!
Keep your kidneys healthy by not ingesting too much salt.
Do you have any idea what happens when you eat too much salt?
The sodium in salt makes your body retain water.
When your body has too much water, your kidneys will have difficulty filtering your blood and removing water out of your system.
When all those extra water stay inside your body, it tends to increase your blood pressure.
Then we’ll go back to tip number 1 again!
Keep your kidneys healthy by not taking too much alcohol.
Too much of anything is never good.
When you go over the recommended daily alcohol consumption, it disrupts your kidneys ability to maintain normal blood electrolyte balance and pH, as well as its ability to filter it.
This will increase your blood pressure.
Can you see by now that every tip seems to be interrelated?
Keep your kidneys healthy by maintaining a healthy weight.
When your obese, chances are, you have high levels of bad cholesterol in your body.
And you already know how bad cholesterol affects your body, right?
Keep your kidneys healthy by not smoking or quitting on it as soon as possible.
Aside from the fact that it’s bad for your lungs, smoking can interfere with the mode of actions of your current medications and decreasing their therapeutic effects.
Smoking also decreases blood flow to your organs.
So if your kidneys are not nourished properly, there’s no way they can work properly.
Your kidneys will definitely be not good at filtering by then.
Keep your kidneys healthy by staying physically active.
When you exercise regularly, blood circulation on your body improves.
When blood circulation is great, this means that your kidneys will get enough blood supply.
If your kidneys are happy, it’ll keep on doing a great job!
Keep your kidneys healthy by eating a healthy diet.
A diet with lots fresh fruits and vegetables does wonders to our body.
The American Cancer Society even advised us to eat 5 servings of it daily.
There’s a juice that can help you achieve the “Five-A-Day” goal set by ACS.
